About the poet- It is written by Dilip Chitre who was a celebrated billingual poet and translator with A remarkable work in Marathi and English . winner of Sahitya Academy ,award his major themes are exile , alienation, disintegration and death.

About poem -it is an autobiographical poem poet Dilip Chitre loneliness and silent journey of his father in the poem his father being old and it has no connection with his family members, there is no one in his family with whom he shares his emotions.

Title-’ father returning home’ is a suitable title because it deals with poet’s father who used to come late at home, who travels daily in local train and returns late at home.

Ø Theme = Old man’s isolation loneliness is the theme of the poem . Old man lives in solitude life , separate from family and friend . His children refuse to share their joys and sorrows. The poet tells us about the painful loneliness of his own father.

Ø Poetic style/language = the poem is written in free verse with no rhyme scheme / metre. It has simple language with first person narration style . The poet narrates about his father’s returning to home. the language is simple which has some Marathi language words which gives regional tone to the poem . The poem has two stanzas with 12 lines . figure of speeches used in the poem increase the beauty of the poem like Alliteration, Metaphor , Simile ,Repetition , Transferred epithet , Personification.

Ø Special features / tone = the poem is sad/ melancholy . In the poem images like train, Eyes, yellow light, late evening creates the special effect in the poem .Poets father is a symbol of all sub urban commuter who travels daily in local trains and reach late at home.

Ø Values ,/ message- Through this poem poet wants us to improve our behaviour with our family members as well as we should admire and appreciate our father’s hard work . we know about the modern children and their behaviour with their father . it is an example of generation gap.

Ø My opinion

I like the poem very much as it is an autobiographical poem , it deals with the portrait of Indian father and his hard work and Sorrow. I feel pity upon the poet’s father and his hardships.
