What is a modal verb?
Modal verb means a small group of auxiliary verbs .It also adds functional or grammatical meaning to the clause. They are also called as the modal verbs or modal auxiliary verbs/ modal auxiliaries, or simply modals .They are only used in combination with ordinary verbs.
A modal verb changes the other verb's meaning to something different from simple fact.
A modal verb is used to indicate /express modality (meaning / function) – that is: ability, possibility, certainty, compulsion , permission, request, capacity, suggestions ,moral duty , order, obligation, or advice. Modal verbs always accompany the base (infinitive) form of another verb having semantic(related to meaning ) content.
In English, the modal verbs commonly used are can, could, may, might ,would , must, should, and ought to.
A modal auxiliary verb gives information about the function of the main verb .
In their simple form, modal verbs normally refer to present or future time:
The modal verbs are different from ordinary verbs
1) A modal auxiliary verb differs formally from other verbs in lacking -s and -ing forms (called, calls, calling )
2) A modal verb is always followed by the infinitive form of a verb
but never follows another verb;
3) Modal verbs do not follow to and are not followed by to. (Except =Ought to)
