Modal verbs/modal auxiliary /modals -1क्रियापद

Read the following sentences 1) You can go (to express -permission )

2) He may come anywhere ( to express - possibility )

3) You should consult a doctor ( to express suggestion or advice )

4) it might rain (to show possibility )

5) I must attend the lecture ( to show compulsion or obligation )

 All the above underlined words called models.

Modal verbs/modal auxiliary /modals 

What is a modal verb?

    Modal verb means a small group of auxiliary verbs .It also adds functional or grammatical meaning to the clause. They are also called  as the modal verbs or modal auxiliary verbs/ modal auxiliaries, or simply modals .They are only used in combination with ordinary verbs. 

    A modal verb changes the other verb's meaning to something different from simple fact. 

        A modal verb  is used to indicate /express modality (meaning / function) – that is: ability, possibility, certainty,  compulsion , permission, request, capacity, suggestions ,moral duty , order, obligation, or advice. Modal verbs always accompany the base (infinitive) form of another verb having semantic(related to meaning ) content. 

    In English, the modal verbs commonly used are can, could, may, might ,would , must, should, and ought to.

A modal auxiliary verb gives information about the function of the main verb .

 In their simple form, modal verbs normally refer to present or future time:


The modal verbs are different from ordinary verbs 

1) A modal auxiliary verb  differs formally from other verbs in lacking -s and -ing forms (called, calls, calling )

2) A modal verb is always followed by the infinitive form of a verb 

but never follows another verb;

 3) Modal verbs do not follow to and are not followed by to. (Except  =Ought to)

 

USE OF    'able to'

 Some Examples  on Modals

1) She couldn't drive a car until she was 18.

2) I looked everywhere for her book but I couldn't find it anywhere.

1) You should study hard .

2) I have to work hard  to get success. 



Use proper form of the given modal Auxiliaries 

1) She Could swim when she was  12 years old.( will, could) 

2)  They might arrive at the party on time, even after missing their bus. 

(might ,can)

 

1) I have to work hard  to get success. 

Replace the modal auxiliary by another showing 'obligation'

2) He's amazing, he can speak 4 languages .

Replace the modal auxiliary by another showing ,' advice'

3) You can halt at Italy .

Replace the modal auxiliary by another showing ,'permission'

Ans=

3)You may halt at Italy .


Other activities 

1) She couldn't drive a car until she was 18.

( Use 'able to ' ,and rewrite the sentence)

 - She was unable to drive a car until she was 18.

2) He can speak 4 languages .

( Use 'able to ' ,and rewrite the sentence)

 He is able to speak 4 languages .


 Fill in the blanks with proper modal auxiliary.
